Mama Monica’s story is one of the many cases that The Optiven Foundation has been able to reach out to the communities through their “Mobility That Brings Smiles initiative“. The initiative has been able to donate wheelchairs, provide basic needs and psychosocial support to many people with disabilities, who have been able to improve their quality of life and dignity.

Mama Monica is a mother of two who is differently abled. She lives in a humble house in Nairobi, where she sells sweets and fruits to sustain herself and her children. Her life has not been easy, but she has always been determined to overcome the challenges she faces and one of her biggest challenges was mobility.

The visit was a surprise, and Mama Monica was so happy and overwhelmed she thanked The Optiven Foundation for their generosity and kindness. “This wheelchair is a blessing that would change my life for the better,” she stated.

She has to rely on a broken wheelchair that was too small for her. She often had to push herself with her hands, which caused pain and discomfort. But Mama Monica never gave up. She always prayed for a miracle, and one day her prayers were answered.

On 7/11/2023, The Optiven Foundation donated a brand new wheelchair to Mama Monica as part of Mobility That Brings Smiles initiative, which aims to provide support to people with disabilities. The Optiven Foundation went on further to also surprise Mama Monica with an educational scholarship for her child, who is a form 2 student. The scholarship would cover the school fees for the child’s education.

Mama Monica was overjoyed, as she had always wanted her children to have a bright future. On top of that, The Optiven Foundation also provided capital to boost Mama Monica’s business and shopping to sustain her for some time. They also offered psychosocial support and encouragement to Mama Monica, who was grateful for their compassion and empathy.
